The Disney Influence

What...what is this? What is this nonsense? Is this...a blog post? Say what now?

Yeah, I did it again, I deserted you. I got super busy as always. And yes I am aware that I never wrote like most of the blog posts I promised you guys. Life happens. And even if you think you do, you wouldn't want me to post them now because I don't remember half of what happened on my two most recent trips to WDW because they were like a long time ago. So they wouldn't even be interesting.

But today's post is going to be a bit different. It's more on the serious side, but not too serious, because I don't roll like that. But here it goes.

Disney is really important to me. From the perspective of a casual Disney fan or someone who isn't a fan of Disney at all, that sounds really dumb. But it's true. Disney has influenced my life a lot in the past few years.

I have always been a Disney fan. I blame it on my aunt and my parents. I blame it on my aunt because she bought me the entire set of Disney Sing-A-Long Song VHS tapes. I blame it on my parents because they bought me like every Disney animated movie ever and took me on my first trip to WDW at the age of four.

I had always liked Disney movies and music. But my real fandom didn't kick in until the year 2007.  The month was August. It was time for my middle school band's first meeting before the school year. The day we would find out where our annual May band trip would be that year.  We walked in to find a huge banner that said "WE'RE GOING TO DISNEY WORLD." I was excited because my last trip to WDW was in fourth grade. I began doing some research on what rides were there, and I ordered my first of many books about WDW: Walt Disney World By Teens For Teens by Kim Wright Wiley.

Then I picked up the 2008 edition of the Birnbaum's Guide to WDW. That book is the reason I am who I am today. I read about tips and tricks about the parks. I read about restaurants and activities and hotels. And then I discovered the key to my fandom...Hidden Mickeys.

I was hooked. I wanted to know more. I wanted to know trivia, details, stories behind things. I read the Wikipedia page for every single ride in every single park. I read my Birnbaum guide cover to cover.

When I got to WDW with my band, I was bursting with excitement. I had the time of my life. I was with my friends, I got tons of time to spend in the parks, and we had the amazing opportunity of playing live in Downtown Disney in front of the World of Disney store while the sun was setting. It was an amazing experience.

After that, I was slowly on my way to becoming a die-hard fan.  My friend and I convinced our parents to let us go down one weekend in May to stay with my friend's grandparents.  I began getting more and more into Disney.

And then, in the summer of 2009 I was on iTunes, and I accidentally stumbled upon a podcast called The WDW Radio Show hosted by Lou Mongello.  I was curious, so I downloaded a few of the podcasts.  I was hooked. I soon became a loyal fan of the WDW Radio show. Soon I was discovering other podcasts, live shows, blogs, and the coveted Disney Twitter community. I began to collect pins and Vinylmations and books and coins. I began to make weekly orders on disneystore.com. I became a charter member of D23.  I became a Disney shareholder. I became Neurotic Disney Teen #29 on Disney Driven Life. And soon I wrote a blog.

Although Disney has influenced me culturally, it has begun to influence my future.  I am a high school senior and I have to start thinking about my future.  And I have decided to work for Disney.

I am a performer. I sing, dance, and act in shows all the time.  Most recently, I was in a production of Disney's Beauty and the Beast.  When people ask me about what I want to do, I now say I want to go to college for musical theatre, move to Florida, work as an improv actor for WDW, or maybe a singer or a dancer, and then eventually work my way up to a casting director or something along the lines of that.  When I first say I want to work in Disney World, people look at me like I'm crazy. Why would I resort to working in a theme park? Well, for your information, doubters, WDW is more than a theme park. It is my home away from home. I've been to WDW six times in the past seveteen years, yet I can walk around and get places without a map. I love everything about WDW. And being a part of creating that magic? That is my life's dream.

I always find it interesting. How a company can be this important to a person. But Disney is more than a business. The movies and music help bring happiness to all ages. The parks are a shining beacon to many. Disney has brought so much happiness to people. It amazes me. And I'm thankful for it.

So yeah, Disney has influenced me a lot. It influences what I do, what I wear, what I watch, what I listen to, and now it will influence my future. But I'm perfectly okay with that.

Xmas Disney Trip Blog - Day 3 + NEWS!!!

Hey everyone!  I hope you enjoyed my last post about Day #2 of my recent trip to WDW!

Now, this post is a little bit different from my two previous posts.  I'm warning you ahead of time, I am going to get very whiny about this particular day.  Why?  Well, I'll explain.

Recently, my sister Madelyn and I have gotten into the Harry Potter franchise.  Well, kinda.  What happened was ABC Family had one of their "Harry Potter Weekends" where they show all the movies except the two most recent ones.  My sister and I watched them...and watched them...and watched them...and the rest is history.  We are hooked.  BUT, neither one of us has any interest in reading the books (my sister took one look at the size of the book and said "no way!").  So we're half fans.

But Maggie, Kara, and Lauren are also fans of the movies and books.  So we all decided that we wanted to spend a day at Islands of Adventure to check out the newly opened Harry Potter World (or more formally, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter). Not our greatest idea.

We should have seen the signs.  When we arrived on property, we happened upon hundreds and hundreds of cars.  We sat in the line for parking for about 20 minutes.  But we pursued.

Okay, let me confess.  I wasn't all gung-ho for this particular day to begin with.  As a Disney fan, you are almost...trained...to dislike the Universal parks.  It's like required.  I hadn't been to a Universal park since 1998 - before IoA even opened.  So I couldn't really form an accurate opinion.  And because of this pre-conceived notion that IoA sucks....let's just say I didn't go in open minded.

We walked through CityWalk, which was surprisingly empty, and found a Universal store outside of the parks.  We stopped in and looked around.  I was on a mission: I wanted a Hufflepuff scarf, a Hufflepuff sweatshirt, and Neville Longbottom's wand.  Madelyn, Eddie, and Anna all wanted Gryffindor scarves.  In this store, they only had the wands and the Gryffindor scarf, so we decided to wait until we actually got into the park. Another not so great idea.

Once we reached the ticket counter, we got our first shock.  We looked inside the gates and saw thousands of people.  It was chaos.

Once inside, we started to make our way towards Seussland, because according to the map, that was the quickest way to HPW.  But, all of a sudden, we find two guys with a sign that says "HPW THIS WAY" with an arrow pointing in the opposite direction.  So, we decide to follow it.

We make our way through Superhero Island and Toon Lagoon.  As we're crossing the bridge to Jurassic Park, we find a mob of people.  Everyone is walking around confused and it was just chaos.  We see a sign that says "Harry Potter World Standby Queue: 120 minute wait".  Us = WHAT?!  And then we spot a sign that says "Harry Potter World Return Tickets".  Byron and my dad wove their way through the mob to get return tickets.  Meanwhile, my mom, Lauren, Maggie, Kara, Eddie, Anna, Madelyn, and I all stayed on the bridge.  All of a sudden my mom realizes she can't find Madelyn.  My mom runs to the nearest worker and asks for help.  The worker completely ignored her and was more worried about handing out tickets than helping a woman find her lost child.  Luckily, Madelyn was nearby on the bridge.

I have several complaints about that whole scene.  First of all, a specific section of a park should not have a wait time.  That section of the park should be bigger if it can't fit in all the guests at once.  Second, why would the return ticket stand for HPW be nowhere near HPW?  And why would you put it on a bridge and right in front of the entrance to another section of the part.  Poor planning.  Third, there should be some sort of organization involved.  I mean the place was utter chaos.  I'm gonna say it: If it was Disney, it would have been handled so much better.  And last but certainly not least, IF A PERSON IS MISSING THEIR CHILD, YOU NEED TO FIX THIS.  You do not stand there and ignore the woman because you are more worried about handing out return tickets.  This is a big no-no.

So after we finally get the return tickets, we decide to split again.  Maggie, Kara, Madelyn, and I headed towards Jurassic Park while the adults took Eddie and Anna to Seussland.

Here's another complaint about IoA.  The lack of signage.  It took us like 15 minutes to find the entrance to the Jurassic Park River Adventure ride!  Anyway, even though it was cold, we decided to get on a water ride.  We made some bad decisions that day.  The ride was okay.  The wait was like 30 minutes which was weird considering it was like 55 degrees outside and it was a water ride.

Afterwards, we decided to go looking for the place to buy the meal plans.  The meal plan there is kind of cool.  You pay a set amount, you get a neon wristband, and you can eat at certain locations without having to pay there.  Unfortunately, the meal plan didn't include drinks.  We found one of the meal plan locations in Toon Lagoon and ordered.  The food was pretty good, but what spoiled the meal was one of the workers.  I'm not entirely sure what his job is.  But basically, he wandered around the restaurant, creeped on people, and flirted with girls.  My guess is that the guy was like in his mid-20's.  He kept flirting with Kara and trying to talk to us.  I was curt with him the whole time.  I mean he was really being annoying.  But Maggie kept talking with him and he kept flirting with Kara and I was wet and cold and miserable and it was already like one and we'd only ridden one ride and all I wanted to do was go into Harry Potter World! Sorry, that sentence was really long and complain-y.

Madelyn and I were just miserable, so we decided to go meet the rest of the group while Maggie and Kara did their own thang.  We met the group in Seussland where it turned out everyone else was equally miserable.

The only thing they had accomplished in the last two hours was see the Grinch show.  Madelyn, Eddie, and Anna got in line for one of the rides that was a Dumbo-style ride.  Wait time? 70 minutes.  To ride a Dumbo ride that wasn't even Dumbo.

We decided that we were all really really miserable, so we decided to head back out to CityWalk for food.  We ate at the NASCAR themed place because it was the only eating place that didn't have a wait.  We stayed there as long as possible so that we didn't have to spend more time actually in the park.  We left with a half hour until our HPW return time and headed back into the madness.  We met Maggie and Kara, walked through Superhero Island, Toon Lagoon, and Jurassic Park until we found....another mob of people.  Apparently it was the standby line.  Well here comes another flaw.  They didn't even check to see with we had return tickets.  We just walked on in without showing anyone anything.  I was like WHAA?!?! So people could just waltz on in without waiting in line and no one stops them.  No wonder its a two hour wait.

Once in HPW...we could barely see it.  My mom wanted to take pictures and let's just say, the only pics we got were of the roofs.

There were SO MANY PEOPLE.  You've heard of Disney closing because they've reached capacity, right?  Well IoA and Universal should take a lesson from them.  We realized that there was no chance of getting on a ride anytime soon, so we were like "let's just buy the stuff and get out." The line for butterbeer took up the entire street, so it was hard to move.  Then, because of the lack of signage, we couldn't find the store.  Then we found it.  And the giant line out the door.  We asked a woman at the exit of the store how long the wait was and she replied "about two, maybe three hours."  Two to three hours to get into....a store?!?  Well, my family went "SCREW THIS."  We talked and decided that we would take Eddie and Anna back to the house with us because Maggie and Kara really wanted to ride the Hogwarts ride.  So Maggie, Kara, Byron, and Lauren got in line for the Hogwarts ride while the rest of us made a beeline for the exit.

Well, I still really wanted my scarf, wand, and sweatshirt, and the kids wanted their stuff too.  So we stopped at a general gift shop in the Port of Entry.  All of the kids/teens had Universal/IoA gift cards and Kara had given me her's so I could get her a Gryffindor scarf.  Well, when we got into the store, which was also mobbed, we searched high and low and could not find scarves anywhere.  Also, the only Hufflepuff clothing were the robes and a cheap-looking t-shirt.  So my mom, Madelyn, and I grabbed everyone's wands and proceeded to the nearest cash register (my dad, Eddie, and Anna stayed outside).

We each split up at three different registers and began to check out.  I handed the woman my gift card, and she looked at me funny.  She scanned it and replied "that's what I thought.  You can't use these cards to buy things.  You have to exchange them for Universal dollars. Then you can buy things."  Me, my mom, and my sister = WHAAAAT?!?  So the really kind woman at my register held all of our things for us while we took a trip to Guest Services to exchange our cards for "Universal dollars."  First of all, that is easily one of the stupidest things I have ever heard.  A gift card is a gift card.  If you sell gift cards, then people should use gift cards to pay.  If you want people to pay with Universal dollars, sell Universal dollars.  Don't sell gift cards.  Second of all, if you do want us to exchange them for Universal dollars, TELL US.  It was never said that we needed to go through this process.  That's the sort of thing you need to tell people.

So we angrily got our "Universal dollars" and went back to the store.  The really nice woman apologized a ton of times, let us cut to the front of the line to pay, and gave us a 20% off discount on the wands because of the inconvenience.  She was probably the best part of that day.  After paying, we high-tailed it out of the park and headed towards the first Universal store we went in to see if they had scarves.  We went in and couldn't find any, and I overheard an employee telling a customer that they had no scarves left on property.  Not even in storage.  And that they were all gone by four.  Nice one, Universal.

So that was my re-telling of one of the worst days of my life. I apologize if my constant complaining ticked you off. Blame Universal.

And I know what you're thinking.  "It's your fault for going during Xmas week!"  Well, I went to Disney during this week too.  And I didn't have any of these problems there.  So, HA.

On a lighter note, I have some AWESOME NEWS!  My parents surprised us with another Disney trip!  My dad has to go to a business thing next week down there and he gets to stay at the Contemporary! And we get to go with him!  It's my first time staying on property! I'm so excited.

It's a short trip; I leave at 7 AM Tuesday morning (from Ohio this time, and not Detroit) and come back Thursday night.  But the good news is, NO CROWDS!! We're spending Tuesday at Hollywood Studios with dinner at Mama Melrose's, Wednesday at Magic Kingdom and then dinner at the Cape May Cafe at Beach Club, and Thursday at DisneyQuest and Downtown Disney.  And the funny thing is, we'll probably do more in those few days than our entire trip in December!

And since we're visiting the two parks I haven't blogged about yet, I'm turning those posts into comparisons!  I will blog about my December trip and then compare the experience to my February one!  I'm excited, are you excited?!

So, I will see you all after that trip!  Look forward to two comparison posts, another December trip post about Downtown Disney, and the long-awaited souvenir post!

Have a Disney Day!

Xmas Disney Trip Blog - Day 2

Sorry for the delay on this post, but I finally got a day so I could post it!
On to Day 2 of my Xmas Disney Adventure!

(PS: If you didn't read the previous post about Day 1, some of the things I mention might not make sense. So you should read it if you haven't already.)

Since the weather was going to be cold and windy again, I suggested Epcot since a majority of the attractions are indoors. None of the adults bothered to tell me that we would be spending a lot of time in World Showcase. So the part when we're all walking around freezing our butts off later...not my fault. But anyway, moving on.

Monday morning, I woke up casually, got dressed, and then looked at the clock: 9:30 AM. Me = WHAAAA?! I rushed out into the living room and demanded to know what time the adults wanted to leave. They casually told me "10:30, so we can be in the park by 10:45." For those of you that know Disney really well, this statement is a huge -FACEPALM-. Epcot is a more popular park than Animal Kingdom, making it more crowded by default.  Future World opened at 8 AM that day, so it was going to be even more crowded when we arrive. AND leaving at 10:30 would most definitely NOT put us there at 10:45. Even a casual Disney-goer knows that you should factor about 40-45 minutes travel time because of traffic and parking...especially when you're off-property.

I had to push the adults and children out the door and we left around 10:15. So we didn't arrive at the gate until around 11 AM.  Once we were all in, Lauren and I grabbed all the tickets and made a break for Soarin'.  Now as some of you may know, Soarin' is a more recent edition to Epcot, and a more popular ride considering the lack of thrill and emphasis on learning in Epcot. So even if it's not a peak season, Soarin' is easily a 90 minute wait.  So if you don't get a Fastpass early, you're either waiting for hours and hours or you're not riding Soarin'.  By the time we got to the machines, the Fastpass times were already 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM.

And by the time we got back to the group outside The Land pavilion, they were bringing out "the sign." If you're not familiar with "the sign," basically it's a sign that reads "All Fastpasses for this attraction have been distributed." By noon, there were signs at Soarin', Mission: SPACE, and Test Track.

So enough about the crowds for now. On to the rides we actually waited in line for.  First up was Journey into Imagination with Figment...because the Imagination pavilion was just next door to The Land.

I personally adore this ride; one, because it's so happy and jolly and two, because there's hardly ever a wait. Eddie and Anna LOVED it. I think we waited about ten minutes, which is the ideal wait time for any ride!

Here's where I'll talk about pin trading.  I am a huge fan of pin trading -- I have two full lanyards: one for keepers and one for traders. Out of the ten people there, I was the only person to have pins, but by this time everyone was into it. My sister, Madelyn bought herself a lanyard and some starter pins and the two younger ones about starter sets too.  I was very impressed with the selection in WDW this time around.  Last time I was there, every pin kiosk had the same pins and same lanyards -- it got boring.  But every time I went to a kiosk, I found something new and/or different.

After our pin-trading pit-stop at the Imagination Institute, I spotted one of the most awesome things ever...let me give you some hints. Imagination Institute, extinct attraction, Michael Jackson, and NO WAIT.  Yes, I am talking about Captain EO.  Now those of you who aren't up on your Disney history may not know the importance of this attraction.  Let me explain.  First of all, I am the kind of Disney fan that needs a time machine.  Because I love reading and learning about extinct attractions.  Captain EO was one of those attractions that I heard some of my older Disney friends talk about loving as a kid.  And when Disney made the announcement that they were it bringing it back, I got really excited.  Because people my age will never get to experience and appreciate things like World of Motion, Horizons, and the original Journey Into Imagination.  Bringing back an extinct attraction is one of the coolest things Disney has done, and I'm very appreciative of it.  Okay, I'm done being mushy.

So we saw Captain EO, and I loved it.  I mean for a show that was made back in the 80's, it still has its old Disney magic.  After Captain EO, we headed towards The Sea with Nemo and Friends (which needs a touch-up on the exterior, see picture below).

I couldn't have cared less about the actual Nemo ride....all I cared about was Turtle Talk with Crush! We waited for about 15 minutes, but considering the length of the queue area, the line moved pretty fast.  Besides, we were either going to have to wait in lines or not ride anything at all.  After the Nemo ride (that Eddie and Anna LOVED), we headed into Turtle Talk with Crush.  Now here's where I brag.  I was the only person on this trip who had been to Disney in the past like five years.  And a lot of stuff has changed.  So I became the person who had to beg and plead people to do certain stuff because I knew they would love it. Turtle Talk with Crush was one of those attractions.  I was the only person who had experienced it (I see it everytime I'm in Epcot) and the others were like "Let's do some other stuff...."  I was like "NO YOU GUYS ARE GOING TO LOVE THIS PLEEEASE." Finally I convinced them to stay and see it....and I was totally right. They all loved it and we constantly referenced quotes from it throughout the rest of the vacation!  This tends to happen a lot during the trip.  So I'm just going to say "I TOLD YOU SO." Never underestimate a Disney ride. If you've never done it, DO IT.  That's my motto.

Because of the crowds, we missed out on many rides while we were in Epcot.  Like, the whole other side of Future World.  We never set foot near Universe of Energy (sadness), Mission: SPACE (ew), or Test Track (sadness).  But we still managed to have fun!  After Crush, we headed towards one of my all-time favorites: Spaceship Earth.  Now here is where I'll talk about Byron.  Byron is the dad of the other family we were traveling with.  Byron is not a big fan of speed, being upside down, spinning, heights, or any other kind of thrill for that matter.  So when he looked at Spaceship Earth, the first words out of his mouth were, "Are we going all the way to the top of the golf ball?!"  -FACEPALM-  Me: "It's not a golf ball.  It's a geodesic sphere!"

So we rode Spaceship Earth...and I had my fun.  You know that part where they take your picture so they can use it at the end? I made a face with my tongue sticking out.  We were cracking up the entire time they showed us the little animation.  Next time you ride Spaceship Earth, make a funny face. It's way more fun!

So anyway, we had gotten a coupon at the bottom of a receipt that entitled us to a discount at certain restaurants during a certain time frame.  We had about 20 minutes to kill until the coupon took effect.  So, we stopped at the pin-trading kiosk in the middle of Future World.  I'll explain more about the fantastic pins I bought there in another post...you're gonna love them!

So we had lunch in the Electric Umbrella.  Considering how many people were trying to use the coupon as well, we got our food pretty quickly.  I've eaten at the Electric Umbrella before, and the food is pretty decent.  They had a bigger selection this time, which I liked.

After that, the adults decided we were going to World Showcase.

We had a few hours to kill until Soarin', so we figured we'd take our time.  We did Mexico and rode the Three Caballeros ride.  I must add that the Mexico pavilion is not built for a crowd.

Considering how many little carts with stuff to buy, and then there's the line for the restaurant and the line for the ride....utter chaos.  Anyway, we stopped at the KidCot coloring things so Eddie and Anna (plus Maggie) could color a Duffy thing and get their stick stamped.  The only complaint I have about this was location.  Sometimes, the tables were really hard to find.  For example, in Norway we couldn't figure out which building it was in, and once we found the building, we couldn't figure out how to get in!  Looking for the stations took away a lot of time, but the stations might have been moved because of how cold it was outside.  Now we know where to look for the future, but first-time visitors will not!

One other thing I would like to point out was the lack of country merchandise in America.  Every other pavilion had plenty of merchandise representing the country.  I was getting really cold and I decided to stop in the shop in the American Adventure.  I had gotten a really nice sweatshirt there last time and I had grown out of it.  But when I went in, I was disappointed to find only a few sweatshirts, and they all had Obama on them.  Not to be hatin' on the Prez, but I wanted a sweatshirt that was patriotic and had something to do with Epcot or Disney.  And the only other clothing was shirts with random sports teams on them.  It was very disappointing.

After a few hours of wandering World Showcase, we glanced at our watches and realized that we needed to get to Soarin' in a half hour and we were on the other side of the park!  We skipped through the rest of WS and bolted towards Future World.  Finally, we headed towards my favorite ride in Epcot: Soarin'.

Here's another example where I go 'I told you so!!'  Byron and the other adults were very iffy about going on the ride, especially once I explained that it was a hang-gliding ride.  But we had gotten ten fastpasses and we were using them all whether they liked it or not!

Now here's where one of my most favorite Disney memories happens.  The fastpass line had built up a little bit for some reason, so we were waiting for a few minutes.  Madelyn had recently purchased a Phineas and Ferb pin (the only one they make?!) and was showing it off.  My sister and I are big Phineas and Ferb fans, so while we were waiting, we decided to start singing "Gitchee Gitchee Goo," a song from the show.  While we were belting it out, a security guard who was standing near by heard us and started snapping along.  He told us we were great, and asked us to sing for the people at the front of the standby queue because "they need entertainment after waiting so long!"  So Madelyn, Anna, Eddie and I began performing the song for the standby queue, and we got a full round of applause from everyone.  People we didn't even know were taking out their cell phones and cameras and filming us!  It was so fun and I was really appreciative of the security guard letting us do it.  The two little ones constantly talked about it for the rest of the trip.  It was truly a magical moment!

After our performance, we got on the ride and the adults LOVED IT!  They loved the fact that you could smell the oranges and the pine trees during the ride.  And, as a bonus, as we were getting off the ride, a woman came up to us and gave us eight more fastpasses beause her family had to leave!  Then we realized...eight fastpasses for ten people.  Well, Maggie and Kara decided to go off and do their own thing.  So everyone got to go on again.  We had about 20 minutes to kill until the new fastpasses'  time, so we hopped on Living With the Land...no wait.  Which is a shame, because it really is a great ride.  It was my first time riding it, and I was very impressed with it.

We rode Soarin' one more time and loved it again! I even hummed along to the score because I know it so well (on my iPod!).  After Soarin', we had an hour and a half or so until Illuminations.  I had my heart set on a major shopping spree in MouseGears, so we spent some time there.  After striking Vinylmation gold in MG (I'm just making sure you are excited for my souvenir post later XD), we wandered back towards Canada to find a spot for Illuminatons.  We got some hot chocolate and infamous turkey legs and parked ourselves in Canada for the show.

Here comes another complaint, but this one is not Disney's fault.  Disney has many international visitors throughout the year, and Disney does well to accommodate them.  But, some like to milk it for all its worth.  While we were standing in our awesome spot for Illuminations, someone in the group asked me to hold something.  I turned around to do so, and an Asian family comes running up and steals our spot.  My mouth dropped open.  My mom went to say something about us already being there, but they turned to us and acted all confused like they didn't understand.  And I knew that they spoke English because I later heard them speaking English. I'm not complaining about international visitors, I'm just complaining about how they think they get special privileges.  But enough of me being complain-y.

Illuminations was fantastic (as always), and they even had a special holiday part at the end that I had never seen.  After the show, we made our way to the front of the park and on our way home.

Now I'm just going to warn you now, the next post is going to get very tense and VERY VERY COMPLAIN-Y.  Day three was Islands of Adventure, and let me tell you, it was easily one of the worst theme park experiences of my life.  Stay tuned.

PS: I would love comments and feedback on my posts so far! I hope you are enjoying them!

Xmas Disney Trip Blog - Day 1

Well, hello there. Long time, no see. I have been very busy lately, as I was planning for my trip to Disney World that I just returned from last night. A lot of stuff went down, so there's gonna be a lot to discuss! Here's the lowdown: There will be seven blog posts about this trip.  There was 6 days of trip-ness and I'll do a post for each day. Then I will write a post about the stuff I bought there, because I bought a LOT of stuff! So here we go with Day 1.

Well, first of all, let me break down how our schedule worked. I just moved to Ohio from Jersey, and we had originally booked our flight from Jersey with Spirit.  But when we moved to Ohio, we needed to find another Spirit hub to fly from, but the closest one was Detroit.  So on Christmas Eve, we drove three hours to a hotel next to the Detroit airport and stayed overnight.  Christmas morning we woke up at 6, got on a tram/bus thing to the airport, and flew to Orlando.  Our friends that we were traveling with were flying in from Jersey a little later, and we were all sharing a vacation home in Kissimmee. Ten of us (four adults, three teens, a preteen, and two kids) stayed in a house built for nine. It was an experience. But the room I was in was Finding Nemo themed, so it made everything better.  First, let's meet everyone!

My family is me (Regan), my mom Donna, my dad Billy, and my sister Madelyn.  The other family consisted of Maggie and Kara (sisters), their mom Lauren, their step-dad Byron, and Lauren & Byron's two kids Eddie and Anna.

Left to right: Maggie, Madelyn, ME, my mom Donna, and Kara
Lauren and Byron (LOL)
Anna and Eddie
My dad Billy (isn't that like, the coolest picture ever?)

Keep in mind throughout these posts that this was Xmas week, so it was mobbed a majority of the time. And FYI, it wasn't my idea to go this week.

So anyway, since the other family didn't get there until about eight at night, we didn't do any parks that day. So Sunday, we woke up early and headed for Disney's Animal Kingdom.

First things first, it was CHILLY. It was in the high 40's/low 50's for the first three days. Oh and there were 25 mph winds. So it was an adventure.

We got to the park around 9ish and it really wasn't that crowded.  Maggie, Kara, Madelyn, and I split from the group and ran towards Expedition Everest.

The first time, we walked right on.  The ride, if you've never experienced it, is a journey to Mt. Everest where you encounter a yeti and he starts wreaking havoc. Madelyn was an "Everest virgin", and she LOVED it. Afterwards, we decided to ride again, and this time there was about a five minute wait.  By the time we got out from the second ride, the line was up to thirty minutes.

Since it was so cold, we didn't even want to THINK about Kali River Rapids. So we avoided it and headed towards Dinoland USA.

We all had never ridden DINOSAUR before, so none of us knew what to expect.  We walked right on, which was cool. Let's just say Madelyn refused to go on it afterwards.  I didn't mind it, but the real adventure was afterwards when we got outside and my cell phone was missing.  I started FREAKING OUT because it was a new phone and stuff and Maggie and Kara were trying to calm me down. We went back into the gift shop they dump you into at the end and we went to the photo counter.  The woman found our picture and called down to see if they found the phone.  They did. She brought it out and I started to breathe again. I was very impressed about how the situation was handled by the employees.  The woman at the counter didn't write me off or anything even though I had myself convinced that the phone was long gone. I will use this situation as a comparison in a later post, but for now I'll continue.

The four of us decided there wasn't much left that we wanted to do but we wanted to get back to warmth as soon as possible. So for some odd reason, we decided to ride the Kilmanjaro Safari (an outdoor ride) which was on the complete opposite side of the park. Well, on the way there, we saw that It's Tough to Be a Bug had no wait, so we stopped there.  Again, Madelyn had never experienced it, but the three of us warned her of the part when the bugs leave and they poke you. So when that part came, the four of us lifted our butts off the seat while the rest of the audience screamed and freaked.  It was more enjoyable that time than the first time I saw it!

Afterwards, we made our way to Kilimanjaro Safari.  As we arrived in Africa, Kara spotted a coffee stand and got in line.  Then Maggie advised her to wait until after because it's a bumpy ride.  We saw a good amount of animals and at one point we had to stop and go off road a little because two antelopes parked themselves in the middle of the road!

Afterwards, we headed towards the coffee stand...and the line had grown by about 15 people. She said she didn't feel like waiting in line, so we headed back to the front of the park to meet up with the rest of the group.

When we got there, the rest of the group was still in It's Tough to Be a Bug, and Kara spotted another coffee stand with a short line.  I shopped in Island Mercantile and bought myself a Vinylmation, but more on that later.  The group reconvened, and by 12 PM, we were off to DisneyQuest.

Now, I'd like to point out that I was the only Disney nerd on this trip. To compensate, whoever's car I was in at that point, I gave the passengers a history lesson, trivia lecture, or strong opinion on a subject relating to Disney.  For example, I gave a lecture on WDW vs. Disneyland, a speech about how I loathe Stitch, and a monologue about the perks of staying on property, just to name a few.

The four of us that had split before (me, Madelyn, Maggie, and Kara) were dropped off at DisneyQuest, while the adults took Eddie and Anna to the ESPN Club on the Boardwalk.  Before doing anything, we grabbed lunch (which was pretty good for an arcade) and decided on what to do.

We found out quickly that DisneyQuest was exactly the opposite of DAK...it was mobbed.  We waited about a half hour for "Ride the Comix" and we were discouraged by the lines at Alien Encounter, so we didn't even bother.  Buzz Lightyear was like a 90 minute wait and so was the pinball game. We headed to the Create section, and this is where we discovered why the waits were so long.

Apparently, DisneyQuest wasn't ready for the Xmas crowds, and the tech problems might have even outnumbered the people.  My sister and I wanted to do the SongMaker, so we got in line.  Out of the four booths, only two were functional, and after ten minutes of waiting, we were down to one.  Luckily, after twenty minutes they got the number back up to three working ones.  Madelyn and I made our song, and then went off to find Maggie and Kara who wanted to do Cyberspace Mountain. We got there, and they were nowhere to be found (this will be a common theme in upcoming posts), so we got in line for it.  It was a relatively short wait to make a coaster, but to ride it was about a 20 minute wait.  We thought that was long, but we hadn't gotten to floor one yet.

We met back up with Maggie and Kara and headed towards our favorite thing in DisneyQuest: Virtual Jungle Cruise.  We took four steps down the stairs and we were stopped by a bunch of people just standing there...the lines for Jungle Cruise and the Pirates game encompassed the whole room plus some of the nearby arcade and went up the stairs.  After waiting for about forty minutes, we were close enough to see the boats.  We saw another root of the crowd problem.  There were four guys working the Jungle Cruise and there were six screens.  Rather than get people loaded as quickly as possible, they stood around and chit-chatted with each other.  At one point, only one of the boats was being used and they weren't loading anyone.  And when they would finally load people, all four of the guys would do the one boat instead of splitting up and loading several at once.  And it's not like they didn't realize people were finished in the boats; they had a screen that had the countdown to when they were finished right in front of them.

After riding Jungle Cruise, we decided to attempt Pirates.  We decided if the line didn't move at all (which it didn't appear to be doing) after three minutes, we would call to get picked up.  The line eventually started moving and we finally got on. We made a beeline for the door, and were home by 6 PM.

Meanwhile, the other half of the group never got into ESPN Club.  The place was packed for the football game, so they headed to the Buffalo Wild Wings near our vacation home.  It was our first experience with crowds that would only get worse from there.

Overall, I say it was a good day.  I was content with the amount of things we got to do considering the amount of people there.

Next up is Day 2: Epcot!

My Fantasmic Tale

So it's been like a month (exactly) since I've last blogged...yeah, sorry about that. If it makes you feel any better, I have four drafts saved. So I started to blog four times....but never finished.

But that's all in the past.  Today I'm going to tell a little story.
Actually, it's a big story because it takes place over the course of 12 years...but I can make it short.

I just want to start out with the simple facts: My favorite Disney park is Hollywood Studios (DHS).  I love every single ride.  I've been on them all at least once except Star Tours (which I won't be able to do when I go because it's being transformed into 3D epicness).  But the only experience I'm missing from DHS, is Fantasmic. I've been to Disney four times in the past 12 years. But haven't fully experience Fantasmic.  And here's why...

Trip #1 (1998): My family goes in, gets a seat, and waits. And waits. And waits.  Soon, it's been 90 minutes, and people are getting up and leaving.  Finally the show starts.   And five minutes into it, the fountains break down and the projector breaks down. "We're terribly sorry blah blah blah we can't fix it blah blah BYE."

Trip #2 (2003): I'm bursting out of my seat on the car ride to DHS.  We arrives.  I run up to the board to see what time the show is.  "There will be no showings of Fantasmic today as we are refurbishing the dragon" or something like that. It was awhile ago, I don't really remember.  All I know is that it was closed and it wasn't opening any time soon.

Trip #3 (2008): My middle school band is going to WDW to participate in their workshops and perform in Downtown Disney and stuff.  April comes, and I'm handed the itinerary.  Hollywood Studios from 9:30 - 2:30.  I get angry and protest to my band director.  He laughs and says "see it when you visit another time."

Trip #4 (2009): My close friend invites me to WDW for a weekend because she's visiting her grandparents.  We get to Hollywood Studios.  Me: "Can we see Fantasmic? I've never seen it all the way through!"  Sophie & Grandparents: "We've seen it a ton of times.  Let's go home and order Chinese food."  I would have protested if they weren't giving me free transportation and accommodation.

So there you have it.  And a few days ago, studioscentral.com posted that WDW was extending their hours for DHS during Christmas week (the week I'll be there) and adding Fantasmic shows! SO I will finally get to see Fantasmic to its full duration.  And I will be sure to blog all about it. :D

PS: Congrats to everyone who was nominated for and/or received a Disney Driven Life Academy Award!

PPS: 10 more days until I'm in WDW!
